Applications Open for 2022 Kyoto World Water Award

The Japan Water Forum is open to the public for the Kyoto World Water Awards 2021. The grand prize group will receive 2 million yen as prize money.

  • Focusing on the resilience and history of development that has recovered from natural disasters, epidemics, etc. while fusing Kyoto's tradition and innovation.
  • Finding the basics that activities based on the unique social and cultural characteristics of the local community will lead to the sustainable development of the region.

Objectives

  • Water-related issues are related not only to the Goal 6 (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also the other SDGs of the 2030 Agenda adopted at the UN General Assembly in 2015.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has made us aware of the importance of safe and sustainable water and sanitation as well as the necessity of building a resilient society.
  • They became aware of Kyoto’s resilience and its long history of development, where people pursued creativity through cultural exchange and at the same time valued harmony between tradition and innovation.

Award Details

The winner of the prize will receive 2,000,000 JPY (approximately 18,000 USD, depending on fluctuating exchange rates).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Any non-profit organization based in a developing country, which is involved in grass-roots activities aimed at solving water problems through measures consistent with local cultures.
  • Countries and territories classified as Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Low Income Countries (LICs), Lower Middle Income Countries (LMICs), and Upper Middle Income Countries (UMICs) from among the OECD’s DAC list.
