Munich Re Foundation seeking Nominations for 2021 RISK Award

The Munich Re Foundation is seeking nominations for the 2021 RISK Award to increase people’s resilience to disasters. Disasters are often a consequence of natural hazards impacting social systems and societies.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) defines disasters as “a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources”.

The prize has to be used for the implementation of the proposed project. With each awardee an individual funding agreement will be concluded that fits to the specific project situation and needs.

The risks posed by population development, environmental and climate change are increasing. Complex technical systems and infrastructure are additional risk factors. The RISK Award partners recognise the need to address this development. The RISK Award has been set up to help improve risk reduction and disaster management by providing financial support to projects dedicated to these issues.

Award Information

The award winner will receive funding up to € 100,000.

Timeline and Formality

  • The timeline of the proposed project should be between 6 months and 2 years maximum.
  • Attachments must not exceed 20 additional pages.
  • The form must be completed in English.

Content

  • The proposal must address the specific annual RISK Award topic
  • The proposed project must include an implementation part (action), a proposal solely based on research is not sufficient.
  • The risks must be related to natural, climate change and or/environmental issues.
  • Risks due to social turmoil, war, chemical disasters, and/or political crises cannot be funded.
  • The Foundation appreciates ideas to involve the people at risk (people centred approaches).
  • The Foundation appreciates proposals which combine bottom-up approaches with top-down frameworks.
  • The Foundation encourages project teams which are engaged in multi-stakeholder partnerships (different sectors, different sizes, different organisational background, PPPs).
