Conservation Mini-Grants Program – United States

Franklin Soil and Water’s annual Conservation Mini-Grant program continues in its eighth year by offering up to $2000 to three non-profits that demonstrate the need and ability to carry out on-the-ground conservation projects.

Franklin Soil and Water’s Conservation Fund is a pool of fees and proceeds originating from donations and events including the Annual Meeting and Tree Sale. This fund supports their Mini-Grant program and allows the District to support partner programming and projects throughout the year. Nearly 30 organizations have been awarded full or partial funding since 2013.

This year brings two new announcements:

  • Franklin Soil and Water’s preferred projects are those directly benefitting Wetlands and Streams. Other projects are still accepted and considered.
  • They will be holding a free, virtual Q&A session for interested parties this February. First-time applicants are especially encouraged to visit with Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District.

Project Examples

Franklin Soil and Water’s first preference this year will go towards projects benefitting Wetlands and Streams. Examples include stream buffers, erosion control, riparian area invasive removal/replacement, storm water infiltration, and the addition of aquatic/wetland plants. Other acceptable projects may include:

  1. Rainwater storage/harvesting with rain barrels/cisterns
  2. Reducing or slowing storm water runoff by planting rain gardens or buffer zones
  3. Green infrastructure with blue or green roofs, underground detention, and pervious surfaces
  4. Landscaping and gardening with native trees and plants
  5. Invasive species removal
  6. Habitat improvement, such as litter collection, addition of wildlife shelter(s), bird houses, or pollinator sites
  7. Soil improvements such as the addition of compost, green manures, or cover crops
