The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar is now accepting applications for the spring term Online Professional English Network (OPEN) Scholarship Program.
The OPEN Program offers 8-week, online, university-level courses in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) developed by U.S. educational institutions.
All courses use the latest in instructional technology to provide participants with an interactive distance-learning experience and are designed to familiarize participating teachers with current methods and issues in the field of English as a Foreign Language. The OPEN Program also connects participants with U.S. English language teaching experts and creates a professional network of international colleagues.
The courses available include:
- Content Based Instruction
- Teaching Grammar Communicatively
- Integrating Critical Thinking Skills
- TESOL Methodology
- Professional Development for Teacher Trainers
- Using Educational Technology
- Teaching English to Young Learners
- English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI)
- Fostering Student Engagement and Motivation (FSME)
Criteria
Candidates must:
- Be an English language professional
- Have strong English language reading and writing skills (ability to complete academic work at a U.S. university level, roughly equivalent to a minimum TOEFL score of 525/iBT 70)
- Be a Mongolian citizen
- Be living in Mongolia for the entire duration of the spring term
- Be able to understand and use English technical terms relating to computers & the internet
- Have regular and reliable access to a high-speed internet connection & access to a reliable, up-to-date computer
- Have basic technology skills related to email, internet searches and downloads/uploads, logins/passwords, and e-file use (e.g., PDF, MS Word, Excel)
- Be able to type in English well enough to perform online tasks in real-time and submit written assignments in a timely manner
- Have at least 8-10 hours per week to devote to the coursework
- Be able to spend 10 to 12 hours online each week for the duration of the 8-week course
- Not hold dual citizenship in the United States
- Be willing to be enrolled in a second or third course, if your primary choice is unavailable
